TONG WEIDONG is head of Violin Teaching and Research Office of the Middle School attached to the Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM). He is an associate professor and the lead player of the CCOM String Quartet, and the General Secretary of the Chinese Musician Association..
Graduating in 1990 from the String Faculty of CCOM, Prof. Tong was then retained as a teacher. He studied with many famous violinists, including Prof. Shanxiu Wang, Weimin Hu, Keqiang Sui, Yaoji Lin and Jörg-Wolfgang Jahn. He was the prizewinner of the National Teenagers Violin Competition in 1984. In 1996 he was awarded a scholarship from Germany's DAAD Founding Association and went to Germany to study, where he completed his master's degree in music in 1998.
During his student life in Germany and over his teaching career in China, Prof. Tong has regularly given solo performances and taken part in string quartet concerts. He has toured and performed in France, Israel and former Yugoslavia, where the skill of his performance was highly commended. In September 1999, Prof. Tong was involved in reestablishing the CCOM String Quartet Orchestra. He then held several successful concerts. He has cooperated with the Hungarian Kodayi String Quartet Orchestra and the Bartok String Quartet Orchestra in stage performance, and attended the masterclass of violin master Sterner and cello master Rusitobuvic. He has participated in Beijing International Music Festival and the American Mansfield Music Festival with tremendous success.
Many of Prof. Tong's students have won awards in both national and international violin competitions. Yue Lin won the gold medal in national "Golden Bell Cup" violin competition organized by Chinese Musician Association in 2003. Yue also won the fifth prize of 2nd Gyeongnam international violin competition in November, 2004 in South Korea. Zhu Ke won the fourth prize in 25th Menuhin international violin competition in April, 2008. Guo Siyan won the first prize at Junior Group in 15th Andréa Postacchini international competition. Tong was also the jury member of that competition.
Prof. Tong was invited by China's Ministry of Culture to be one of the judges for the 2001 National Teenagers Violin Competition. In 2003 he was a judge for the National Adult Violin Competition "Gold Bell Cup", organized by China's Music Association.
